Shop Class for Democracy
These "shop class" forums, designed for new first-year students, provide safe deliberative space for undergraduate students to learn the skills necessary for self-governance through practice. You will build skills in critical thinking, dialoging across difference, and deliberative decision-making and discussion. Through hands-on learning, you’ll gain skills to engage in deliberative discussions on your own issues, as well as across a diverse array of subjects and expand your comprehension in a multi-dimensional manner.

Practicing Civil Discourse Co-Curricular Certificate
The Practicing Civil Discourse for Citizenship certificate from Ohio State’s Center for Ethics and Human Values (CEHV) helps students learn and practice civil discourse, aligning with the university’s motto, “Education for Citizenship.” Through coursework, event attendance, and opportunities to participate in a wide range of co-curricular programming, students earn points toward the Practicing Civil Discourse for Citizenship certificate at their own pace.

Civil Discourse for Citizenship Academic Certificate
This interdisciplinary 12-credit certificate gives undergraduate students training in the theory and practice of civil discourse through its required course (ARTSSCI 2400/E: Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society) and electives from various disciplines. The purpose is to help future professionals and citizens appreciate civic values so they can contribute to the creation of healthy democratic communities that recognize the importance of free speech and open dialogue across differences. In addition to providing valuable skills that can be applied across many contexts, having the Civil Discourse for Citizenship Certificate on your transcript sends an excellent signal to prospective employers.
